Structural Wall Alteration & Stone Restoration
Expert Structural Alterations with Traditional Stone Masonry
At Lees Builders Ltd, we take pride in delivering complex building projects that combine structural engineering with exceptional craftsmanship. One of our recent projects involved transforming the rear elevation of a traditional stone-built property by creating a much larger opening for a contemporary glazed installation.
The objective was to increase natural light and create a stronger connection between the internal living space and the garden, while preserving the property’s original character. Working with natural stone requires precision, experience and a thorough understanding of structural construction, making this an ideal project for our experienced building team.

The Client’s Vision
The existing opening was relatively small and restricted both natural daylight and views of the surrounding garden.
The client wanted to create:
- A much larger glazed feature
- A brighter open-plan living space
- Improved garden views
- A seamless finish that respected the original stone building
- Structural integrity throughout the alteration
Our role was to safely remove part of the load-bearing wall, install the necessary structural support and carefully rebuild the surrounding masonry so the completed work looked completely at home within the original property.
Careful Planning Before Construction
Every structural alteration begins with detailed planning.
Before work commenced we assessed:
- Existing load-bearing walls
- Structural requirements
- Steel beam specification
- Temporary support positions
- Stone matching requirements
- Building Regulations compliance
Careful preparation ensured the project progressed safely and efficiently from beginning to end.

Supporting the Existing Structure
Because the opening formed part of a structural wall, temporary supports were installed before any masonry was removed.
Heavy-duty Acrow props and Strongboy supports safely carried the building loads while work progressed.
This critical stage ensured:
- Structural stability
- Safe working conditions
- Protection of the existing building
- Accurate installation of the new structural beam
Enlarging the Opening
Once fully supported, the original stonework was carefully dismantled and the opening enlarged.
Working with traditional stone buildings requires patience and precision. Rather than simply demolishing the wall, our team carefully removed sections of masonry while preserving as much original stone as possible for reuse.
This approach helps maintain the authentic appearance of the finished building.

Structural Steel Installation
After the opening had been prepared, a structural steel beam (RSJ) was installed to permanently support the masonry above.
This important stage allows the enlarged opening to safely carry the existing structural loads while providing the strength needed for the new glazed installation.
All structural work was completed using professional building techniques and in accordance with current Building Regulations.
Stonework Restoration
One of the most satisfying aspects of this project was rebuilding the surrounding stonework.
Our experienced craftsmen carefully selected and rebuilt the masonry to match the existing stone courses, mortar joints and character of the original property.
The finished result blends naturally into the building, making the new opening appear as though it has always been part of the house.

Preparing for the New Glazing
Following completion of the structural and masonry works, the new opening was accurately prepared to receive the bespoke glazing system.
The enlarged opening will provide:
- Significantly more natural daylight
- Improved garden views
- Greater energy efficiency
- A contemporary living space
- Increased property value
- A seamless transition between indoors and outdoors
The Finished Result
The transformation demonstrates how careful planning, structural expertise and skilled stone masonry can completely change the appearance and functionality of a property while respecting its original architecture.
